About Macalby Holiday Cottage
The Story behind the Name 'Macalby Cottage'
My grandparents spent most of their summers and a few winters going to Harlyn Bay, and our entire family have such happy memories of this beautiful beach. When they passed away the family put a bench on the headland overlooking the beach with the inscription "For Dorothy and Eric Bell, who so loved Harlyn Bay". Unfortunately, due to the harsh winds, the seat didn't last very long and after about the third one we gave up!
My grandmother, Dorothy Bell, loved Harlyn Bay with a passion and even into her eighties would strut down to the beach with a large flowered hat and a wooden surf board under her arm, she used to put some of the pros to shame and would go right out, even occasionally body surfing! For some unknown reason (my aunt thinks it is a character in a book, but cannot remember which one!) her nickname was Macalby.
When many years after her death we bought our house, we thought it would be fitting to name it after her, hopefully it will last a lot longer than the bench!
